Nautical Vibes: Crafting a Hard Chined Entryway Table
Переглядів 13 тис.2 місяці тому
Making tables is fun and pretty easy to do which is why I decided to upgrade out entryway table to one that better fits our lifestyle, and I wanted to try a few new ideas, like making a table with hard lines, not a lot of soft round-overs like you can easily get with a trim router, I also wanted a thicker top to give the table a more sturdy look, and I wanted to experiment with different kinds ...

What the Pros Won't Tell You, What's Best, Wood Dye or Wood Stain?

Choosing what woodworking finish to use is key to getting excellent results. Wood dye can be a great alternative and in many cases can be far superior to wood stains, but it really depends on the wood you are using, where the wood project will live and what it's purpose is; for example a wooden fence that lives outside, subjected to rain, wind, snow and sunlight is not a good candidate for wood...

Colin, I used to do strength tests for a living in building product research for a major UK company, and you need to suspend a weight off the beam. A bucket filled with water as a weight is good. Using a hydraulic piston will intermittently put pressure on. With a weight pulling down the pull is constant. That’s how we did it and I was building the jigs to do these tests.

fun fact if you use an oil like tung oil if you use water to wipe it down then sand with 320 to remove the lifted grain then apply tung oil over a few weeks let it dry. then when you get it wet the grain wont lift and ruin all the work you just put in to re oiling the stock

My surface hinges are old as is the cabinet that they came off of. I'm having trouble putting them back on because they have been off for months. So according to your video, I should put the hinge on the door first, then the wood wall. And I found small slivers of wood under some of the hinges,I guess it was for proper fit? My home is over 100 years old I've learned many things on the old cabinet work.

Outstanding. There's no substitute for experience and I'm happy the old timers also make UA-cam videos, and not only the young guns who think they know it all. This gentleman says "I've seen this happen multiple times" multiple times. That's a real lesson.

Nothing better for drywall.. cut it out, stick it back, perfect patches. Trash your Zip tool.. In a pinch great for cutting or clearancing wood joints. Cut your joints tight, then run the Osc Tool to get clearance. Also, in a pinch you can dig a slot in 2x lumber where access is difficult. Typically you'd chisel it out, but the vibe tool gets it straight perfect, and and chisel clean out. The Osc Tool does some amazing stuff.. digging 1.5" deep in framing lumber can be challenging.. chip cleanout is a problem.. sometimes drilling an exit hole helps, and scraping the chips to the exit help. good for shaving surfaces to a small degree.. proper chip exit strategy really helps for deep plunge style cuts without burning the wood, tool or blade. My Dewalt 20V brushless cordless is very powerful/nice.. I'm sure they all are these days...

I don't understand why everybody keeps making these great big sleds that go both sides of the blade, they must not have ever used a real slide table saw. I made mine similar to yours only a bit bigger (5' long x 3'6" wide ) so I can cross cut a 4 x 8 sheet of ply, but I never have to take mine off because I built up the other side of the blade with another sheet of ply so now my whole saw bench is flat just like a proper slide table saw and all I do is just remove the fence when I don't need it. My saw is just a Dewalt but now I can rip and cross cut 8x4 sheets safely.

Very interesting. When i started my model hobby in ln the 80:s, Ca glue was the preferred glue for balsa wood. But they were advertised as developed by Nasa. Now, if they have anything to do with it, i don't know. But it came in 3 different viscosity, fast medium and slow. Acetone will debond Ca by the way.

I like this quite a bit. Especially since the back rail for supporting the fence on your saw is made of angle iron as does mine. Other solutions I have seen depend on that support being made of square tube steel which have a bottom surface that can be drilled so as not to interfere with the travel of the fence. Despite the cost of the brackets, I'll be doing this build.
